St. Johns County

Citizens for a New Tree Ordinance

Where are we in 2019?

  • Citizens for a New Tree Ordinance (Citz4Trees) was formed in 2015.
  • By May 17, 2016 the Board of County Commissioner's recognized Citz4Trees as a stakeholder and directed staff to bring back changes to the land development code that would preserve the tree canopy.
  • In 2016 and 2017 Hurricanes Matthew and Irma intervened and stopped progress.
  • In 2019 after multiple meetings Citz4trees proposals remain in the hands of county staff.
  • County engineering staff who attended the "stakeholders" meetings have been steadfast that current road heights require clearcutting and grading and that there is NO WAY developments can be built without cutting everything down.  (Although it is done in other Florida counties?).  However, recently, the County Commissioners have tasked them to come up with a "better way" than clear-cutting.
  • In the four years, MASSIVE clear cutting has occurred across the county.  Approximately 100,000 home permits are outstanding for more clear cutting.  The people who live here are UNSPEAKABLY ANGRY at the loss of the beauty of their county at the hands of developers.

  Not this!
